In a move that is already generating buzz across the sports and entertainment world, Netflix has officially announced the release of its latest sports documentary, The Underdog, chronicling the complex and emotional journey of Tyler Summitt — the son of legendary Tennessee Volunteers Women’s Basketball head coach, Pat Summitt.

Set to premiere globally on [Insert Release Date], The Underdog offers an intimate look into the life of a man born into basketball royalty, but who found himself navigating a path of intense scrutiny, personal setbacks, and ultimately, redemption.

Directed by Emmy-nominated filmmaker Sarah Feldman, the documentary dives into Tyler’s early life growing up under the shadow of one of the most celebrated coaches in NCAA history. Pat Summitt, a trailblazer and eight-time national champion, instilled a fierce competitive spirit in her son. However, Tyler’s own coaching career took a dramatic turn in 2016 when he resigned from his position as head coach of Louisiana Tech amid a scandal, sending shockwaves through the sports community.

The Underdog does not shy away from the controversy but instead embraces it as a turning point. Through exclusive interviews, personal footage, and candid reflections, Tyler opens up about the mistakes that defined his lowest moments, the painful loss of his mother to Alzheimer’s in 2016, and his journey toward healing and self-forgiveness.

“It’s not just about basketball,” Feldman says. “It’s about legacy, pressure, failure, and ultimately, the power of resilience.”

Netflix officials describe the documentary as “raw, human, and deeply moving,” aiming to resonate with audiences beyond the sports world.

The film also features rare archival footage of Pat Summitt, as well as interviews with former players, friends, and mentors who helped shape both her legacy and Tyler’s recovery.

The Underdog is expected to be a conversation-starter, raising questions about the burden of legacy, public redemption, and what it means to rebuild after public failure.

Tyler Summitt, now working in a more private role within the basketball community, says he hopes the film encourages viewers to “own their past, but not be owned by it.”
