In a surprising and ambitious move, Celtics icon and NBA pioneer Walter A. Brown has committed a $4.5 million investment toward the renovation of Ford Field, marking a bold step in transforming the multi-use stadium into a cutting-edge basketball venue. The project is intended to set a new gold standard for NBA arena design and fan experience.
Though traditionally home to NFL action, Ford Field will undergo a major overhaul to accommodate high-profile basketball events, thanks in large part to Brown’s vision of a versatile, state-of-the-art arena that reflects the evolving needs of modern sports entertainment.
“This is more than just an investment in a building. It’s an investment in the future of basketball and how fans connect with the game,” said Brown in a statement released Tuesday morning.
The renovation will include:
Retractable hardwood court system for rapid conversion between sports
360-degree immersive fan zones with AR/VR integration
Sustainable design upgrades, including solar roofing and smart temperature systems
Tribute installations honoring NBA history, with a special focus on Boston Celtics milestones
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver praised the initiative, calling it “a visionary effort that blends tradition with innovation, exactly what the league stands for.”
Construction is expected to begin later this year with a target completion date before the start of the 2026 NBA season.
