In a heartwarming move that is bound to impact the local community, Cleveland Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell has announced a $7.5 million investment to convert a house in the city into a shelter for homeless youth.
The 26-year-old basketball phenom revealed his plans during a press conference this morning, stating that he wanted to use his platform to create a lasting change for the city’s vulnerable youth population. “This community has supported me from the start of my career, and it’s time for me to give back in a meaningful way,” Mitchell shared. “No young person should have to face homelessness, and I want to provide a safe space for them to rebuild their lives.”
The shelter, which is located in a quiet neighborhood in Cleveland, will offer not only temporary housing but also educational programs, job training, and mental health support. It’s expected to house up to 50 young people at any given time, providing them with the necessary tools and resources to transition into stable lives.
Mitchell’s generous contribution is part of a broader effort to combat youth homelessness in the area, which has been a growing concern over the past few years. The facility is set to open by the end of the year, with plans for expansion already in the works.
Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb praised Mitchell for his commitment to the city, calling it “a transformative investment in the future of Cleveland’s youth.” Local officials and nonprofit leaders have also expressed their excitement over the initiative, noting that Mitchell’s involvement brings much-needed attention and resources to a critical issue.
“Donovan Mitchell has not only been an incredible player for our team, but now he is making a difference off the court,” said Cavaliers head coach J.B. Bickerstaff. “His actions are a testament to the kind of person he is, and we couldn’t be prouder to have him as part of our community.”
Mitchell’s project is just one part of his growing philanthropic efforts, as he has also been involved in various initiatives supporting education and mental health advocacy.
The shelter is expected to provide a beacon of hope for many young people who have nowhere else to turn, and it underscores the importance of athletes using their influence to create positive change
