Netflix has just announced the official release of “The UnderDog”, a gripping new sports documentary chronicling the life and legacy of Buffalo Sabres icon Gilbert Perreault. Slated for release on June 14, 2025, the documentary promises an in-depth look at one of hockey’s most electrifying and underrated talents.
Directed by Emmy-winning filmmaker Laura Jenkins, The UnderDog traces Perreault’s journey from small-town Quebec prodigy to the heart and soul of the Sabres franchise. Through never-before-seen footage, exclusive interviews with former teammates, coaches, and family, and emotional narration from Perreault himself, the film aims to redefine how fans view one of the NHL’s most graceful playmakers.
Perreault, a Hall of Famer and the first overall pick in the 1970 NHL Draft, played his entire 17-year career with the Sabres, dazzling fans with his smooth skating, pinpoint passing, and unmatched creativity. Despite his legendary status in Buffalo, many feel he never received the national spotlight he deserved—until now.
Netflix is positioning the documentary as the centerpiece of its summer sports lineup. “This is more than a hockey story; it’s about loyalty, resilience, and the artistry of a player who defined an era,” said Netflix Sports VP Marcus Lang.
