In a powerful gesture of compassion and community support, retired NBA star and San Antonio Spurs legend Tim Duncan has announced a $7.5 million personal investment to convert a historic estate on the city’s East Side into a state-of-the-art shelter and resource center for homeless youth.
The shelter, to be named “The Tim Duncan Center for Hope”, will provide housing, education, job training, and mental health services for young people experiencing homelessness across Bexar County. The facility will feature transitional housing units, classrooms, therapy rooms, and recreational spaces designed to foster healing and long-term success.
Duncan, known as much for his quiet philanthropy as for his Hall of Fame basketball career, said in a statement:
“San Antonio gave me so much throughout my life and career. This is my way of giving back — by helping those who need it most, especially our youth, find safety, support, and a second chance.”
City officials and local nonprofits have praised the move, calling it one of the most significant private investments in San Antonio’s fight against youth homelessness in recent memory.
Construction is set to begin this fall, with the center expected to open its doors by late 2026
