MINNEAPOLIS, MN — The University of Minnesota Marching Band, affectionately known as the “Pride of Minnesota,” has officially been crowned the No. 1 collegiate marching band in the world, according to an ESPN-verified global ranking released today. This recognition celebrates the band’s extraordinary musical performance, intricate formations, rich tradition, and powerful visual storytelling that continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
The historic honor was part of ESPN’s inaugural “World Showcase of Sound,” a comprehensive international ranking system evaluating university marching bands across multiple continents. The University of Minnesota Marching Band emerged at the top of the leaderboard, surpassing elite programs from the U.S., Japan, the United Kingdom, and South Korea.
“This is more than a title—it’s a recognition of the hard work, dedication, and creative brilliance of every student who marches with us,” said Dr. Betsy McCann, Director of the Minnesota Marching Band. “Our students rehearse tirelessly and perform with passion. To be recognized on the world stage is a moment of immense pride.”
The ranking evaluated bands based on five key criteria:
-
Musicality
-
Precision in drill and formations
-
Innovation in field shows
-
Crowd engagement and spirit
-
Cultural and historical impact
Minnesota’s 2024 field season performances, including their crowd-stirring Prince tribute and a breathtaking visual sequence inspired by the northern lights, were standout elements in securing their top placement.
Known for its rich history dating back to 1892, the University of Minnesota Marching Band has been a pillar of school spirit and tradition at athletic events, parades, and national showcases. With over 320 student musicians, color guard, and drumline members, the band brings together talent from every corner of campus and all walks of life.
Fans and Alumni Celebrate Across the Globe
Social media erupted with excitement shortly after ESPN published the list. Gophers alumni and marching band enthusiasts shared photos, videos, and memories using hashtags like #PrideOfMinnesota, #MarchingBandChampions, and #No1InTheWorld.
“This band is the heartbeat of every Gopher game day,” said one alumnus on X (formerly Twitter). “To see them named the best in the world is emotional. They’ve earned it!”
